In the past three years, tire safety awareness has been debated heavily. Tire safety has been in the news ever since the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating the relationship between Firestone tire defects and rollover accident statistics.

Multiple lawsuits have been filed against the Firestone tire manufacturing company because of a tread separation defect in their tires. In August 2000, Firestone recalled at least 14 million tires, but there have still been hundreds of accidents each year due to tire defects.
