Each year in this country, there are nearly 400,000 wrecks that involve a large truck, 18-wheeler or big rig.

Big trucks like 18-wheelers are dangerous even under the best of circumstances. When a passenger car tangles with a big rig, it is the car — and the passengers within that car — that lose.

Because these trucks are so big, it’s difficult for them to slow down. Truck drivers also have problems with visibility and control, which puts them at risk of a serious accident. Most trucks have a significant blind spot that impairs the ability of a truck driver to see smaller vehicles in neighboring lanes.

Trucks also make wider turns, causing them to unknowingly sideswipe smaller cars. Further, larger tractor-trailers often carry significant loads that can accidentally spill onto the road.

Some recent studies have shown that up to 25% of 18-wheelers on the road have significant safety problems. In one recent Texas study, safety violations included poorly adjusted brakes, tire or wheel issues and running light malfunctions.

According to the the latest statistics from the United States Department of Transportation, U.S. highways see more than 400,000 wrecks each year that involve an 18-wheeler, and more than 4,000 people are killed in these wrecks. While truck drivers were not always at fault in these accidents, the results from a wreck involving a big rig are often magnified.
